Thanks, and a Feature Request
« on: April 30, 2010, 04:46:31 am »
Hey hey - I've just upgraded to .21, updated my custom Allmovies file and everything's working flawlessly for me ;D So I just wanted to say a big thanks to Nostra and Rick and everyone who's been testing and making the program better.

I have a (small?) request though - since I've undergone multiple changes to libraries and file structure in the last few months, my poster files have gotten lost somewhere along the way (as I never stored them in the database - they were always next to the movie file but paths have changed). Would it be possible in a future release to add a feature "Search for poster in same directory as file"? I have each movie stored in its own folder with a single poster. This would save me possibly weeks of adding them manually...

Thanks again

You're welcome.

I know your requested feature would be useful for some, but I'm not sure how it would best be implemented...

  • an optional folder location (instead of all in one folder)?
  • with additions detected and automatically added?
  • how would that work if posters are saved in the database?
  • as a one-time import? But that's possible now...

Consider using the technique outlined in Importing images using IMGbyID utility to get your posters into the database. I save mine in the database, then configure PvdImport save them "beside" the media files, where Media Center finds them. Redundant, but safe and effective.

Thank you Rick. I'll have a go at the steps outlined in that thread.

For me, at least, optional folder location/rules would be an ideal option - that way I could set it the same as my MC library and the whole thing could foreseeably be seamless. Alternatively, a right click on an entry or multiple entries in PVD with a "find poster in folder" would work equally as nicely (it could then just add any posters it finds in the same folder as the movie and save them however you have set it up in preferences).

Then again, this might be something where I'm the only one who would find it useful ;)

One more question. How would that work if there were  already assigned posters?
Maybe some control dialog box "There is already at least one assigned poster, and the one you are importing might be duplicate. Are you sure you want to import it anyway?" with the checkbox "Don't ask me again"?

I'm the specimen to confirm it is possible (;)), and I did it a couple of months ago importing ~5k posters. It saved me life. Proper renaming of posters to be imported was crucial, darichman.

The image names match the Title field in PVD exactly thanks to meticulous MC/PVD syncing ;) I think this will be my best bet.
