oh, the other piece of critical information I left out: I had to exit PVD and restart it before the changes to default plug-ins were in effect. I think.

I went to tools, preferences, plugins and highlighted alternates for each of the current plugins and clicked "set as default" for the following types "movie information" (I chose TheMovieDB [en]), "poster import" (I chose Amazon [en]), and "people information" (chose EGAFD_People).
Something's borked with one or all of the prior plugins used to parse the webpages (imdb probably). These others seem to do as well and I no longer get "movie not found"
I'm sure there's another solution upstream in this thread but I'm damned if I understand it (work in IT too).
