« on: April 10, 2010, 09:41:55 pm »
Is it possible to IMDb plugin add a field  Soundtrack as has been done to Top 250 then in order to add custom items to the memo field
Soundtrack I like the IMDb Votes and Top 250.

Everything (or mostly everything) is possible ;) The only question is: will I get some time to implement this...

Actually, another question is: Why Soundtrack and not something else? There's lots of information on IMDb that some might think would be nice to have in their database. You have to draw the line somewhere. If the line is to be redrawn, maybe we should do a poll to determine which additional fields are most wanted.

Another consideration is adding more elements as custom fields is confusing for new users. At some point—I suppose when a major change is being made to the structure of the database—these fields, if in popular use, should be added as standard fields. Unless a conversion routine is developed, that means these "add-on" fields my be lost in the upgrade. It may not be a good idea to users too invested in them.

That's how, for instance, posting users custom fields would help nostra to eventually decide which to implement in future versions.

A user's custom fields aren't necessarily going to shed much light on the specific information they may want to get from IMDb. Most of my custom fields are for information from Allmovie. Some of them might be similar to information available on IMDb, but not downloaded by the plugin. Even I couldn't tell you which I might prefer if both were available. The most likely answer, however, is I wouldn't want the data from IMDb—because I'm already happy with the Allmovies data. There are, in fact, data elements I get from Allmovies instead of the equivalent from IMDb—so they go into standard fields.

What I would appreciate is users doing a little research before making such requests. Even if they're convinced they need the information themselves, some information about it would help us determine what's involved and whether it will be of interest to others. So, for example...

What is a soundtrack, and what information does IMDb have about it? The popular meaning of "soundtrack" is the music track-based recording often produced with the movie. IMDb has a soundtrack page which might have an Amazon link link to such an album. The information that's presented there, however, is a list of the music credited by the movie. These are often two very different things. The album is going to include all or a reasonable selection of all the music used on the soundtrack, while not all are necessarily included in the credits. What is the suggestion for? The soundtrack album link, a tree-like recording (like Awards) of the credited pieces, or just a capture of the whole page (like Technical Specs)?

My guess is most users, if interested at all, would prefer information about the soundtrack album. But good information about these should be readily available from music sites via Web search. This one, for example, searches the title at Allmusic (I've replaced "%s%u" with "Shawshank+Redemption" so the link will illustrate the results)...

http://www.allmusic.com/search/album/shawshank+redemption

The album entry includes an authoritative, hyper-linked track listing (with sound clips!) and often a brief review. The IMDb soundtrack page for the same movie is here. This example is quite favourable, as it does appear to include credits for everything. That doesn't include, however, the tracks created by the movie's composer.

Anyway, I'm not arguing one is better than the other—only that there are good reasons for users to want one or the other. Then either or both of them are perhaps better accessed via browser for full benefit. The IMDb credits, for example, are linked in the usual way. So using the page directly, you can quickly see lists of other movies the composers and performers have been credited in.

No, I'm not doing more case studies! ;D

Laserdisc details: No, the database is for movie information, not media information.

Filming locations: Maybe, if it's available for most movies in consistent form (i.e., identical locations are always referred to in the same way).

Soundtrack: No, see my previous post.

Sound Mix and Color: No, we already have Technical Specs.

Edit.
Sorry to offend. Not my intention.
The post was intended to be supportive of all prior posts but not taken that way. Editing loses its balance so I will refrain from further comment.
