does anyone know how to import from excel?
Yes, and I wouldn't characterize it as "complicated" or particularly difficult.
i have a .txt with only title and year but when opening in excel , it goes to the same column
If you open a TXT file from the File menu of Excel, it automatically launches its
Text Import Wizard. If used properly, that will properly import most common text file formats into columns.
Before you do that, I suggest you consider more carefully exactly what information you want to capture. If you have a "database of 6000 films," that surely includes more than just
Title and
Year. You don't need any information you're going to download from IMDb (or elsewhere) anyway, but you should make an effort to retain whatever personal information you may have recorded (e.g., date viewed, rating, comments, etc.). Although you can make changes later, it's easier to consider at the start exactly what is going to be included in the database, what data sources are going to be used, what custom fields need to be included, etc.
If your media is on a HDD, the file scanner should be able to match the files to the database records—if the same
Title and
Year are used in the file pathnames. If this is not the case, it would be a good idea to include the file pathnames in the import as well. If your media is not on a HDD, it will be even more important to capture whatever it is you use to identify the media (i.e., a label or index number).
