The default option (at Preferences - Miscellaneous) is to store all images inside the database.

ok, so if unchecked that option , the posters will be saved in the selected folder.

Is there any problem having the posters stored inside the database?

i have read some people when updating to a newer version, they have lost the posters

On the contrary. You should not do otherwise without having good reason for doing so (e.g., the same images are routinely used by another application).
