Firefox/forum problem displaying attached images
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:37:12 pm »
Normally, clicking on the thumbnail of an image attached to a post displays that image. This has recently stopped working for me in Firefox (3.5.6, now 3.5.7) running in Windows 7. There's no change in Safe Mode, with the cache cleared and firewall disabled. I can only view them by downloading the image using the link. It works normally in IE and Chrome. I'm wondering if anyone here is having the same problem and/or knows what the solution is.

Try turning off your firewall.  Test firefox.  Turn firewall back on.

Fix firewall settings, I think  ;D

I tried that, and I've since tried disabling everything McAfee does (malware, scripts, etc.), but that made no difference either. It seems clear it's a Firefox issue. But a search doesn't find anything relevant. Maybe it would help if I knew the proper term for whatever that web process is. I see the thumbnail links are of the form...

...but I don't really understand what that means—other than to guess it's a PHP script command to download and display an image. This URL, BTW, will open the original image in a new tab, but it does nothing when the thumbnail is clicked.

Ahhh.  The old image scripting issue.  Images displayed via script are considered a threat.  Norton was one of the first to cause me grief with this.

Check your internet security settings in the control panel.  You'll probably find what you want in the advanced section worded similarly to 'image scripting'.

Sorry, I don't understand what bearing this has on the resolution of the problem. Are you suggesting Firefox is preventing the display of the image because it thinks it's an exploit?

Close.   I'm suggesting that the new operating system comes with internet options set to a default.  For example when I went to Vista, I had issues with getting images in e-mail, where none existed before.  Firefox is just taking the cue from the INTERNET OPTIONS for your operating system, so Firefox isn't really the problem.

If you poke around in the control panel -> internet options, I'm sure you'll find the fix there.

My bad....

Firefox in the tools->content there is a check for loading images automatically.  There's an exceptions button to the right.  The checkbox should be checked, and you probably shouldn't have any exceptions.

There's also a thread indicating a realplayer add-on can cause this.

I suggest you give this link a try....

I just upgraded to the newest FireFox.  I now have the exact same situation.  The older version showed the image, but the new version does not...it shows the link.

When I go to a website that uses image scripting AND mod-rewrite to modify the url, it works fine.  When it's a plain <img src=show.php> format, the images don't show up.

Well, I don't have time for this anymore.  I have a website with image scripting that needs to be fixed <grin>.

Okay, I can abandon my reply that none of your previous suggestions made any sense. ;D

Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone.

I take it then you think this is a Firefox bug, rather than a configuration issue?

BTW, were you on Firefox 3.5.6 before? I just updated to 3.5.7 today, but already had the problem with 3.5.6.

My version was 2.? ... a couple of years old.

I'm in the firefox forum now looking for an answer.  No doubt I have some clients that have seen this already and just not mentioned it. Gad I hate surprises !!

BTW, it's definitely a security issue.  Scripted images are unsafe because images are downloaded onto your computer.  If they are programs instead, it wouldn't be good.

Fixed...finally!

In about:config, set dom.disable_image_src_set to FALSE. I have no idea how mine got changed to TRUE.  ::)

I suppose this should have led me to the solution, but I don't have a clue how these things work. :-\

Strangely, I saw this in a forum, but didn't mention it because it didn't help me.

dom.disable_image_src_set;false

I still have the same issue, but no matter.  Glad you found a fix.  I'm still working on my websites.  Tons of code to go through.
