New Client-Server Feature: unavailable database
« on: May 28, 2009, 09:54:10 pm »
So I got that new 0.9.9.8 and thought I'd setup a firebird server on my Ubuntu machine just for testing.
Then after a daring forum search I gladly found the syntax of the string that is to be entered in the "Connect to server..." dialog.
But although I created a database "pvdb.fdb" fine with isql on the server, PVDB just says "unavailable database" when I enter "192.168.1.2:pvdb.fdb" or any other path after ":" - with the same user/pass I used to create the database. (yes thats the correct IP -.-)
Does that DB file have to be accessible in the Windows shares or do I have to change Firebird settings to make the server accessible or what?

It should be "192.168.1.2:%fullpath%/pvdb.pvd"

It should be "192.168.1.2:%fullpath%/pvdb.pvd"
as said, that ("any path") doesnt work

Check the ports. (3050 by default, should be open)

Linux says fb-server is listening on 3050 and I can open a raw telnet connection to that port.

Does the fb-server have access to the database file?

What happens if you do the following in Terminal:

> isql-fb
> connect 192.168.1.2:%fullpath%/pvdb.pvd user SYSDBA password masterkey;
> show tables;

-change masterkey to the real password (if you have changed it)
- the last line (show tables) is not really needed

P.S. I have installed Ubuntu with Firebird Superserver 2.1 here and it works just fine connecting to it from a client on Windows XP

root@server:~# isql-fb
Use CONNECT or CREATE DATABASE to specify a database
SQL> connect 192.168.1.2:/usr/lib/firebird/2.0/pvdb.fdb user SYSDBA password <pass>;
Database:  192.168.1.2:/usr/lib/firebird/2.0/pvdb.fdb, User: SYSDBA
SQL> show tables;
There are no tables in this database

Could you try the following:
1. Create a database in PVD (under Windows)
2. Copy it to the Linux machine
3. Try to connect to it

P.S. What is the exact text of the error message you are getting?

unavailable database
can't format message 13:96 -- message file D:\Tools\firebird.msg not found
Error Code: 55

then: Error: failed to open database
After I copied that .msg-file from Linux, it says: Unsuccessful execution caused by an unavailable resource.

When I copy a PVD from Windows I get the error:
Quote
(madExcept-3.0 - non-commercial edition)
cannot disconnect database with open transactions (1 active)
Unsuccessful execution caused by system error that does not preclude successful execution of subsequent statements
Error Code: 37.

PVDB got the server connection string in it's title bar, but when I try to add movies I get another error.

Perhaps another interesting point: when I try to save a local DB on a network share of the server, I get the error:
Quote
Unable to complete network request to host "server".
Failed to establish a connection.
Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.

Unsuccessful execution caused by system error that does not preclude successful execution of subsequent statements
Error Code: 401.

Could you please try if the problem persists in 0.9.9.9.

P.S. Restart firebird daemon before trying to connect to be sure.

Please post you pvdconf.ini from "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Personal Video Database\" (or application folder if PVD is started in portable mode).

Start the program using debug.bat  (viddb.exe -debug), after the error message come up close the program and post log.txt file generated in the app folder.

What firebird version are you using?

I'm using firebird2.0-super 2.0.3.12981.ds1-12

Hmm, maybe that's the problem as I have tested it on 2.1. Could you check if it's working with the version 2.1?
Your config and log seem OK.

%appdata% works fine too Wink

Right  ::)

Ah, that did the trick :). Was just a google search away from firebird 2.1, apt-get had only 2.0 in store.
Just for the notice: the database needs to be created by PVDB and the firebird user on Linux needs r/w rights on that file.

Thx

At last, we solved it  :D It's good to know what can go wrong in such situations, though.
