Saw this new site on the XBMC forums.

http://www.themoviedb.org/

Looks like they have an API - might be a good place to pull covers and posters from.

Thanks, looks good. I'll write a plugin for this resource when some free time will be available.

In the meantime, consider adding http://www.themoviedb.org/search?search[text]=%s%u to Web search.

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd mention our API was officially launched last week. You can read all about it here: http://api.themoviedb.org/2.0/docs/

Cheers,

Any word on this? Since IMPawards this would be the best site to use, I think.  :)

I suppose the fact this site provides an API makes it easier to write a plugin, but it doesn't look like it yet has much to offer. It seems you can only count on entries for popular movies. Many of those don't have posters. For those that do, the poster size is inconsistent, and usually larger than an ideal size for use with PVD. Those interested in nice screenshots and high resolution posters should add a Web search for this site, but I don't think a plugin or script is warranted.

I think this site has matured a bit since it released. If someone would write a web search for it that would be great.

Websearch:

Movies: http://themoviedb.org/search/movies?search[text]=%s%u
People: http://themoviedb.org/search/people?search[text]=%s%u
  Both: http://themoviedb.org/search?search[text]=%s%u

The /movies or /people part takes you directly to the Movie or People results page, rather than the catch-all "Popular Results" page.

The popularity and content of this sight seem to be continuing to improve, so I'm renewing the plea for a plugin.

Personally, I would prefer it to use the Movie.imdbLookup API method. I would only use it in addition to the IMDb, so an independent search by name wouldn't be of much use. Also, I'd be happy if whatever posters and fan art are available are simply added to existing posters and screen shots. There's not too many of them, and the quality is consistent enough, it seems pointless to screen them. If this is the way it worked it would consistently find and download anything available for any particular movie—without any user intervention.

Ideally, a plugin should be flexible/configurable, but maybe it would be much easier to code this way. :-\

Thanks!

BTW, Media Center is developing to a point where users are likely to be demanding fan art of the the type provided by TheMovieDb (for use in it's Theatre View). PvdImport does not yet handle screenshots, as MC currently only uses one "cover art" image per media file. But I expect that will change soon. If fan art images catch on, it will probably become necessary to distinguish them from screen shots in the database.

Custom image field...(drool).  With captions?  And a list or table format display option?

Right now I use screen shots for capturing portraits of the cast members and ignore action sequences.  This is faster than finding a good action image, and gives me a better representation of the movie than using the automated screen shot maker.

The problem is that I'd like to put names with the images, and (holding my breath) using the same image for the cast member "person page" rather than loading the same image twice (breathing out, slowwwwly).

Of course enhancements to the screen shots would work just as well for me.  Someday, I'd like to end up with is a movie page with portraits of the cast (where I have them) in place of the less interesting text links.  I'm sure this could be done through an html export, but the more I can do in one place, the better.

It hardly seems right to call the screen shot maker "automatic" when it won't do intelligent face tagging (which, of course, includes taking shot only of recognized faces). But don't hold your breath. ;)
